USS Arizona Memorial Digital Documentation
In 2013, The National Park Service (NPS) assembled a team of nationally-recognized 3D measurement and imaging experts to digitally document the USS Arizona Memorial and the ship that lies beneath it. SOH provided above-water laser scanning and surveying while others contributed side scan sonar imaging and underwater photogrammetry. All members of the team provided their services free of charge to support the National Park Service mission to preserve and protect American history.

In 2022, SOH was called on to again 3D document the Memorial for the purpose of informing future treatment and maintenance activities of the historic structure. New in the 2022 scope of work was a desire for SOH to develop a Revit model of the Memorial. For the creation of a 3D model that would be used as the basis for structural renovations for years to come, SOH turned to Revit expert Larry Kleinkamper of Lanmar Services in Austin, Texas. The sculptural lines of the USS Arizona Memorial make for challenging and difficult modeling, especially given the limitations of Autodesk Revit and its preference for straight lines and 90° angles. Echoing the sentiments of all on the SOH team, Mr. Kleinkamper said, “The Arizona Memorial proved to be a challenge for our team, but we know and understand its historical importance and its status as a National Memorial to the sacrifices made by so many during the Pacific War.”

(Above) One of the scanners used on the Ilikai Marina rooftop was the Z+F 5010x. The phase-based scanner captures excellent images and accurate and detailed laser scan data. The Navvis VLX (shown at left with SOH Scanning Technician Brian Correa) was used as a comparison scanner technology. Both platforms showed outstanding performance, with the VLX being the faster of the two, and the 5010x the more accurate.
