(Above) One of the scanners used on the Ilikai Marina rooftop was the Z+F 5010x. The phase-based scanner captures excellent images and accurate and detailed laser scan data. The Navvis VLX (shown at left with SOH Scanning Technician Brian Correa) was used as a comparison scanner technology. Both platforms showed outstanding performance, with the VLX being the faster of the two, and the 5010x the more accurate.

The Ilikai Marina condominium, with its incredible Pacific Ocean views, is adding a spectacular pool and recreation area to its rooftop. With the interest of architects and structural engineers from all over the United States, residents needed to provide accurate measurements and comprehensive photographs of existing conditions. Sam O. Hirota, Inc. captured both, in less than one day with its new VLX mobile mapping system.

SOH utilized traditional survey methods in unconventional ways. As part of the project's scope, SOH survey crews located and mapped the building footprint and surrounding streets. They then carried the State Plane coordinates to the top of the condominium's roof where targets, strategically placed throughout the roof area, were also mapped. The targets could then be identified during scan post-processing and the coordinates appended to the scans. Thus, the scans themselves acquired real world locations, helping everything from mobile LiDAR SLAM workflows to combining the technologies used, to correct representations of the project on a map.
